[DOC ID:1762]
Letter from Archibald Mitchell in Kirkcudbright, concerning the case of his daughter and her throat ailment, which seems to have first occurred 12 years previously (c. 1767), when it was treated by Glasgow and Edinburgh physicians. Dr Gilchrist and Mr Walker have been consulted. Her condition is now described as a 'malignant putrid Quinsey', which has left her unable to swallow, so she is being fed on liquids through her nose. Addressed to 'My Lord' - probably Lord Selkirk, the major landowner in the area and an Edinburgh neighbour of Cullen – about referring her case to Cullen. Dated November 1779 in the annotation.1? [DOC ID:4533]
Reply headed 'Miss Mitchell. Kircudbright'. A rough note, with prescription, probably intended for her father, via Lord Selkirk, in response to Doc ID:1762. Cullen says the case is 'not full enough', but in the meantime has sent the prescription for Dr Gilchrist and Mr Walker to use.6 November 1779

[DOC ID:1755]
Letter from John Walker, in response to Cullen's request for more information, giving a more detailed account of the case of Miss Mitchell. Her health was undermined in the West Indies from where she returned two years previously. She has rheumatic pains, angina, and a long-standing throat condition which is described variously as a tumour on the tonsil or a quinsy, which makes swallowing difficult. She is now weak and emaciated because of her difficulty in swallowing. She has been treated with mercury. Walker asks if it may be 'the Sibbins'.13 November 1779

[DOC ID:4536]
Reply to John Walker 'For Miss Mitchell'. In response to Doc ID:1755, Cullen is sorry to find her case 'so desperate', and advises Walker to treat her with mercury or mezereon, for the use of which he gives directions.14 November 1779
